10年ぶりに『借りぐらしのアリエッティ』を見て

小さい頃からジブリの作品を見る機会が多く、独特の美しい世界観が大好きな私は、小さい頃、まだ小学生になる前に一度だけ見た『借りぐらしのアリエッティ』を、10年以上ぶりにもう一度見た。
最後に見た時から10年以上がたち、様々なことを経験し、様々なことを考えてきた私なりに、再びこの、『借りぐらしのアリエッティ』という作品から考えさせられたことを記そうと思う。

人間のものを借りながら人間という生き物の下で生きている小人のアリエッティ達は、自分たちの暮らしを「借りぐらし」と呼んでいる。人間は危険であるという考えから、人間から姿を見られたらすぐに住む場所を移り、また新しい場所で別の借りぐらしを始める。物語の初めには、その体の小ささや、人間という知能の高い生き物の近くで暮らさなければならないという特徴故に絶滅寸前だと語られており、アリエッティと彼女の家族は彼女ら以外の小人の存在を知らなかった。

ある日、アリエッティ一家が借りぐらしをしている屋敷に、翔という少年が一週間だけ療養にきた。心臓の病を抱えていながら、複雑な家庭環境故か12歳とは思えないほど大人び、落ち着いた雰囲気の少年だ。優しく穏やかな表情とは裏腹に、全てを諦めているかのような口ぶりで大人の話に応えている。部屋の窓から外を眺めるその眼は、遠い世界に想いを馳せるかのように、現実から距離を置きただ時の流れに身を任せているかのようにも感じられた。

翔がこの家に来た時、彼は家の庭でアリエッティの姿を目にする。この家では昔から小人を見たという話があり、翔の曽祖父が小人のためにイギリスの家具職人に作らせた、非常に巧緻なドールハウスが翔の部屋に置かれていた。翔はアリエッティを見ても、危害をあたるような様子は一切なく、初めこそその存在に驚いていたものの、むしろいつもの優しい表情で見守るようにして見つめ、小人を見たということを他の大人には隠し、アリエッティの存在を守ろうとした。
そんなある時、翔は厚意から、アリエッティたちの家の家具をその小さなドールハウスへと交換するのだった。これがきっかけとなり、アリエッティ一家は引っ越しを決意する。

後に彼はアリエッティと話す時、

「そのうち、君だけになってしまうんだろうね…。君たちは、滅びゆく種族なんだよ…。」

「これまでにも多くの生き物が絶滅してきた。僕も本でしか見たことがいないけど。美しい種族たちが地球の環境の変化に対応できなくて、滅んでいった。残酷だけど、君たちもそういう運命なんだ。」

こう語った。自身の病気と、絶滅寸前の小人という二者の存在を重ねることで、同情心を抱きつつも、病気である自分に対して、”仕方がない”という諦めの気持ちを持つのと同じように、アリエッティたち小人の運命に対しても悲観的な思想を語った。

しかし、アリエッティはそんな翔の発言に酷く怒り、自身の小人としてのプライドを貫いていた。

「運命ですって…？あなたが余計なことをしたから、私達はここを出ていくことになったのよ。」

「何としても生き延びなきゃいけないって、お父さんも言ってた。だから危険があっても新しいとこに行くの。そうやって私達の種族が、どこかで工夫してくらしているのを、あなた達が知らないだけよ！私たちはそう簡単に滅びたりしないわ！」

翔の行為は善意によるものであって、一概に否定できるものではない。この場面から言えることは、人の善意は相手にとっての悪になることがあるということだ。しかしだからこそ、そんなアリエッティたちにとって悪となった翔の行動を必ずしも悪だと否定することはできないのである。善悪や正偽など、これらは誰にも決めることはできない。白黒はっきりしたものではなく、その場その時、その立場によって千変万化、さまざまな姿に変化するのであると思う。

それでは私たちはどう、善悪を判断すれば良いのか。それは、判断する、分別するのではなく、全てを受け入れて生きるべきなのだ、というのが私の考えである。

一概に決めることのできない事象なのであれば、その場その時で分けて考え、受け入れるだけで良いのではないだろうか

高い知能を持ち、文明を築いた人間という生き物。便利なものに囲まれ生きることが当たり前になっている生き物。一方で原始的に、自然の下で生活する生物達。人間は果たして発展したと言えるのだろうか。人類が遂げてきた進化や文明の発展は、果たして必ずしも良いものと言えるのだろうか。

効率や生産性が重視される現代で、豊かな暮らしをし、物に囲まれて生きることが当たり前になってしまった今、多くの人は自然や他の生物、すべてのことに対する感謝を忘れている。これらがあるからこそ、我々の生活は成り立つににかかわらず。

生物のヒエラルキーの頂点にいる人類は、それだけでは決して生き延びることはできない。地球という環境の中にある自然、そこからできた無数の生物達、始まりを気づいた先祖達。我々は、地球という星に借り暮らしをしているのである。だから、アリエッティたちのように感謝をしながら生きるべきなのだ。今を生きることは決して当たり前ではない。
この世に生を受け、生きているということ、生かされているということに何時も感謝の気持ちを持たなければいけない。

たとえば私は、食料として動物を殺すことなどを否定するわけではない。それが人間の生き方であり、現時点で避け難い事実だからだ。
ただやはり、一番大事なのは気持ちなのだ。最後は気持ちの問題である。この事実を忘れずに感謝の気持ちを持ちながら、これらのことを忘れずに生きるということこそ、最大の恩返しなのではないだろうか。考えるということは、高い知能を持った人間だからこそできることであり、だからこそ愚かな生物になってしまうこともあるが、さらにそれを補うことができる能力でもあるのだ。

人間であるという意味は、そういうことなのではないだろうか。

翔は人間であり、助けてくれる大人や、整えられた生きる環境、手術という医学によって生かしてもらえる機会を持っている。にもかかわらず生への執着を持たず、どこか生きることを諦め、まるで希望のない瞳で世界を眺めていた。最後に救いたいという思いが、エゴに変わりアリエッティの生活を壊してしまったものの、絶滅寸前であるという事実にも臆さず、強く生きるアリエッティに、生きる強さを教えられる。何かを信じる強さ。生きるということは簡単なことではない。

決して共存することのできない人間と小人。その両者をつなげるのはやはり、人の想いというものだったのではないだろうか。
